So for the past 6 or 7 years I've been saying that I want to jump for Kadooment*. But every year for the past 6 or 7 years, the music has just been getting shittier and shittier, and the costumes more and more trifling, and I really couldn't bring myself to spend a whole set of money on a trifling costume to go and jump down to Spring Garden to shitty music with strange sweaty men wanting to wine up on me and a whole set of people getting on wutless as ever for no good reason.

But this year, the music isn't as bad as it's been in recent times, and I've been telling myself since last August that I must really do this Kadooment thing before I turn 30. Plus some of the costumes I've seen aren't half bad and I have a willing jump-up partner to help ward off the strange sweaty men. So a couple of weeks ago I bit the bullet and went and registered with a costume band, namely Cable and Wireless Contact, in the Pirates section. (I had really liked the Campus Boyz costumes too — they're pretty, though I suspect some of them are also a little impractical — but evidently so did everyone else, 'cause they sold out early.)

So yeah, I'm jumping for Kadooment this year, God spare life. I'm looking forward to big fun and 'nuff frolic!

*For people who don't know what Kadooment is, here's a description:
If you have never experienced Grand Kadooment Day, then you've been missing out on one of life's great treasures. A summer street carnival, filled with people consumed with "festival fever", dancing to Caribbean soca music and wearing spectacular, multicolored costumes and body paint. It's the climax of the Crop Over festival - "sweet fuh days" - in Barbados. The grand climax of the festival, this is a spectacular street procession of bands of costumed revelers, accompanied by huge trucks packing elaborate and deathening [sic] sound systems and tons of beverages. There are several costumed bands to choose from, and membership is not restricted to locals. Costumes range from very conservative whole piece ones to bikini-like ones. If you plan to "jump", you should wear sneakers already broken in, use adequate amounts of sun-block, and keep yourself well hydrated. Rain often blesses the "Jump Up" and are welcomed as the summer sun can be challenging.
The word Kadooment is a Bajan word meaning a to-do, a ruckus, a commotion. Kadooment day jump-up looks like this and this and this.

Well, I hope you have fun. I am trying to secure a media pass to shoot within the Stadium that day. If I do get the pass, I will be clicking away.

Honeychile, you be not the only disillusioned pilgrim, have not been to a tent – have really lost interest from when calypsonians say they will not do anything new til piracy is quashed… I liked NCF for 1st time when they said Back In Time Kadooment, they should keep it so!
