The New York Times writes about the growing popularity of "volun-tourism", or holiday trips that also involve some sort of altruistic work in the destination country.

I was planning to volunteer abroad this year, for a month or two or three. I had even contacted (and gotten an encouraging response from) Cross Cultural Solutions about the opportunities available in Ghana, Tanzania or Costa Rica. Then other things cropped up and I had to put that goal on the back burner, probably for the next few years. I have good reasons for putting it off, but really, I think my back burners are getting a bit overcrowded.

A friend of mine volunteered for three months in India this year, teaching kids with learning difficulties. Volunteering isn’t something I’d really considered before but I started to think seriously about it after talking to her – it seems like a really good way to learn about a different culture and to do some good while you’re there. But yeah, finding the right time to do these things is always tricky :)
