Interestingly, a recent poll by a local newspaper revealed that most respondents disagreed with the Prime Minister’s suggestion that growing our own food is the way to go.
I suspect that many of the dissenters weren’t contesting the premise that cultivating a kitchen garden would reduce their grocery bills, but were sceptical about how they would find the time and energy (or the land, the Leader of the Opposition suggests) to do it.
It was recently announced that the ailing “Land for the Landless” programme is to be revitalised. I think it would also be a good idea to try to develop some sort of allotment or community garden programme (which could also have the benefit of reducing the number of vacant, untended and overgrown lots around the island), and to encourage the practice of intensive gardening.
