Two big awards ceremonies took place last night: the Grammys and the BAFTAs. I didn’t watch either show, but the first thing I did online this morning was look for the results (and then for the red carpet fashion).
Slumdog Millionaire (which I have not yet seen, despite everyone telling me to do so) cleaned up at the BAFTAS.
Raising Sand, the excellent collaboration between Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, was the big Grammy winner, garnering five awards, including album of the year. This brings Krauss’s Grammy total to something like 2 dozen, more than any other woman in Grammy history.
But the biggest Grammy-related happening in the news this morning took place before the show even started. Pop star Chris Brown turned himself into the LA police, and was charged with making criminal threats against an unidentified woman who had “visible injuries” when the police arrived on the scene of the incident. All sources are saying that the woman in question is Rihanna, but according to protocol in cases of alleged domestic abuse the police have not released the victim’s name. After the altercation, initially reported as a car accident, both Rihanna and Chris Brown cancelled their scheduled Grammy appearances. Rihanna’s publicist says “Rihanna is well. Thank you for your concern and support.” Brown’s people have not issued a statement.
