I passed by the Divinity School yesterday on my way back from somewhere and wondered why there was such a crowd gathered, and such a buzz of excitement in the air. Then I thought, “Oh, of couirse, it’s a graduation.” And then a big cheer went up, and I thought, “Wow, they are really celebrating this occasion with enthusiasm, good for them.”
Today I read on the website that it wasn’t just any ordinary graduation: the Most Reverend Archbishop Desmond Tutu was there receiving an honorary Doctorate from the School of Divinity. If I had indulged my curiosity and hung around outside the New College just a little bit longer, I might have gotten a glimpse of Archbishop Tutu himself, and that would have been pretty amazing.
The lesson I have taken from this is that, never mind what my mother used to say, it sometimes pays to spend less time minding my own business and more time minding other people’s.
